Cowes Week has a long and prestigious history that goes back to around 1826 when George IV brought racing to the Isle of Wight.  Since this first visit, the Cowes Week Sailing event has been held each year and become one of the most prestigious and famous sailing events in the world.

Royal blood has always been associated with the festivities. Visits from family members are commonplace. 

Princess Anne visited Cowes Week 2023, visiting the Royal Yacht Squadron before heading out on the water to watch the race action. As Princess Anne arrived a 21-gun salute was fired from the brass canons that line the sea wall facing out to sea.

The Isle of Wight has always had a strong connection to sailing, and the Cowes yacht race is a celebration of the island’s maritime heritage and culture. 

Known as the ‘Garden Isle’, its beautiful scenery provides a stunning backdrop to the racing. Some of the most iconic landmarks can also be clearly seen from the water.  

Osbourne House was the residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who were deemed keen sailors.

The Needles is famous for its fort and rocket testing facility. Also used by Marconi during the first radio experiments.

Famous sailors have also been produced from the island’s sailing elite, Sir Ben Ainslie, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Dame Ellen MacArthur, to name a few.

The Round The Island Race is another famous Isle of Wight Race.

Racing and Competition

The racing takes place on the Solent, the water between the Isle of Wight and the mainland opposite Portsmouth and Southampton.  The waters offer sandbars, double tides, and strong currents. All adds to exciting racing for the competitors of around 1000 yachts over the eight-day duration of the event.

There are around 40 classes ranging from elegant classics to the most recent and modern foilers. Races are broken down to provide categories for boat types and sailor experience. Weekend sailors and experienced world champions can all be seen doing battle on the water.

Trophies are awarded to the winners, a tradition that dates back over 100 years.  The most recognised are the Britannia Cup, the Queen’s Cup and the King’s Cup, again all stemming back to the Royal heritage of the event.

Historically a large firework display on the final Saturday takes place along the harbour wall.  Unfortunately, for the Cowes Week 2023 event, the fireworks were cancelled.  The Red Arrows display team are a regular visitor to the skies above Cowes.

Festival And Entertainment

Evening festivities are a big part of the week’s itinerary and provide fun and entertainment after a hard day of racing.

Throughout the week there is live music, bars, and food stalls.  As well as the many restaurants that line the short walk through the town of Cowes.

Top tips for festival locations:

Cowes Parade – Great views over the water with live music, stalls and bars.

Cowes Yacht Haven – here you can find the biggest evening parties, ranging from live bands to comedy acts.

Northwood House – for the more prestigious party goer, Gin Festival, Champagne Garden Party and the Black Tie Ball.

Shepherds Marina – hosts iconic events such as the Crew Party Night and the Ladies’ Day Lunch.

For those keen to plan their classic racing well in advance, here are the planned regatta dates: 27-07-2024 – 03-08-24.

Best place to park at Cowes Week

There is free parking along the coast road leading to Gurnard. A 15-minute walk along the promenade with great views of the boats as you head into the centre of Cowes.

What day are the Cowes Week fireworks

The fireworks historically are on the last Saturday of the week’s events. these were cancelled in 2023 so check before travelling.

How many boats take part in the Cowes Week racing

Up to 1000 boats compete in the week’s events. So there is always plenty of sailing action to be seen from the sea front view points.
