Entry into the house is like stepping back in time by 150 years.

As you follow the route around the house you get a glimpse of how the royals lived in the 1870s.

Much of the furniture and decor is maintained and kept as if they were away on holiday.

The house was built between 1845 and 1851 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home and rural retreat.

Albert designed the house himself, in the style of an Italian Renaissance palazzo. The London architect Thomas Cubitt who built the house in 1847 also designed the main facade of Buckingham Palace.

An earlier smaller house on the site was demolished to make way for a new and far larger house.

The original entrance portico survives as the main gateway to the walled garden

Despite Albert not expecting the House and Gardens to be one the best tourist destinations in the future. His hard work and dedication to producing such a beautiful landscape cannot be underrated.
